To instill a common understanding of what a quality research is, the PCC Teacher Education Council (TEC) organized a seminar on research writing titled “Research 101: APA 6th Edition” last August 7, 2019 at Rooms 801 A & B of the PCC Centennial Building with Dr. Perlita R. Antonio, the Vice President for Research, Planning, Development, Quality Assurance and Extension of PCC, as the resource speaker.

The seminar was made invitational for other programs to help particularly those who are currently taking up thesis writing course.

Mary Crisselle Sanchez, the emcee, began the program as she made mention of truth as the core of research and God as the Absolute Truth which led everyone to invoke the Holy Spirit through an opening prayer by Kyle Rafaelle Vasallo, Freshman Beadle. Afterwards, Junie Cabantoc, the Council President formally introduced Dr. Antonio as the resource speaker.

Dr. Antonio started by briefly presenting her journey in completing her dissertation as Ph.D. candidate to spark inspiration to every student present at the seminar. She continued with quoting Carol Dweck, PhD, a renowned book author about having a “growth mindset” that sees challenges and failures as learning experiences rather than wasted opportunities and the entire process as inculcating the value of achievement rather than the value of conformity. Dr. Antonio wanted every student to possess growth mindset in conducting research as she went further in the discussion.

The seminar became more informative as Dr. Antonio clarified the difference between the American Psychological Association (APA) format and the Modern Language Association (MLA) format. She stressed that the MLA format is used in the field of Humanities like Literature and Philosophy while the APA format is applied to Social Sciences like Education and Psychology. She then gave an overview of the contents of a thesis paper in APA format and discussed each chapter by showing examples of each part. She made use of video clips to further discuss how a quality research is done as well.

Afterwards, a forum went by for clarifications or inquiries regarding the discussion. Rizza Tolentino, 4th Year BSED- English student, concluded the program by delivering a thanksgiving remarks on behalf of the TEC and the attendees.
